Many communities are commemorating Memorial Day with a field of flags. This great gesture strikes a chord with most people because it is a visual reminder in living color of the promise the nation made to its veterans for their sacrifice.
When our country calls, we stand up, put on the uniform and do what we are asked to do for however long it takes to get it done. The contract we veterans have with our country is to protect and serve this whole land. When we return, our service has earned the praise and respect of the Nation. As a reward, we are granted the deed to a small portion of the land we helped to protect. It is a plot of ground roughly six feet by two feet and is ours in perpetuity when we die.
Tomorrow at 10:00am we will participate in a field of flag ceremony on Town Hill honoring all who have served and died. But more, the funds raised by the event will be used to support Fisher House, which provides temporary housing near VA hospitals for families to be near loved ones who are undergoing prolonged treatment and rehabilitation at the hospital.
If you can make it, please consider attending. It is a short one-hour program.
